| Tunes and Shroons
Another Page In Laurel Jean’s Scrapbook This year, I thought it was a big deal when my family and I found in my backyard, four skillets-full of "shroons", the local colloquialism for the yellow morel mushrooms native to our area. "Shroons" are quite the rage around here, and a real springtime delicacy. The old-timers say that, really, it's simple to find shroons, "...ya just gotta know where to look". |

| As the 2005 "shroon"
season drew to a close, my introduction to the giant mushroom pictured
here was completely unexpected, as I presented Concert Ministry on May
5, for the annual Mother-Daughter Banquet of the Pana Christian Church.
This shroon-hunter's dream stood outside the fellowship hall in the main
foyer, directly en route to the Men's Room. (Well, I would never
have thought to look there). ?
Church elder Eldon Hammond tells me that this giant morel is the creation of Dale Warren of Warren's Grove, an area woodcarver who creates these and other masterpieces using, of all things, a chainsaw. In the case of the mushroom, Mr. Warren also applies wood burning, to create the effect of light and shadow that one would find in the shroon's natural environment, the Midwestern woods. This particular
shroon was later sold at a silent auction to benefit the church's preschool.
My thanks to First Christian Church in Pana for giving me the opportunity
to enjoy this truly unique piece of art.
