| The title song
for my first all-Christian CD, and also a favorite from my “Journey Home”
collection, “Vision Through Your Eyes” is dedicated to my two greatest sources of vision, first to Jesus, and second to a growing list of people,
both blind and sighted, that He has placed into my life. I was led
to write this song, in thanksgiving for these two most precious gifts,
after learning of the retirement of several inspiring teachers from my
high school alma mater, The Hadley School
For The Blind. The song was a personal conversation with
God and my friends, and although I copyrighted the piece, I never really
thought of making the song a part of my repertoire as a presenter.
Just over a year
after I wrote “Vision Through Your Eyes”, I was asked to present for the
Dominican
Sisters of Springfield, IL at the Sacred Heart Convent. Though
I had in front of me an outline of Scripture references, notes for music
and speaking, and some small inspirational readings, the Holy Spirit prompted
me during the presentation, to offer “Vision Through Your Eyes”. Many of
the sisters approached me after the program, to thank me for this song,
and for the vision of hope that it gave them. Most of these women
were sighted, and had lived much longer lives as Christians than I in my
young adulthood. The picture, taken later, shows, from left to right,
standing, Sr. Catherine and Sr. Marie; seated, Laurel Jean and Sr. Emilia. |

| Through further conversations
with several of the sisters, I learned that God had a purpose for this
song, and that I could no longer be the judge of who would qualify to be
blessed by the words and music. As part of two album projects, “Vision
Through Your Eyes” has been distributed worldwide. It has been played
on radio and television, and I present it regularly during my Live appearances.
It has helped organizations such as the Lutheran
Blind Mission to promote ministries and outreach to the blind,
and has reminded both blind and sighted people of the greatest vision of
all, that of Salvation through Jesus, The Christ.
The song begins
with questions that have often been asked of me by both blind and sighted
individuals, and in a contemporary contemplative style endeavors to answer
these questions from my personal perspective.

Vision Through Your Eyes
Lyrics and Music © 1996 by Laurel
Jean Walden
Why do you even try to understand
The wonder in the night sky, the brilliance
of the day?
You cannot see. Won't this be a waste
of time?”
I hear too many questions of this kind.
And some people say to me, “If only you
could see, to make your dreams come true!”
What do I answer in return?
There is so much to learn.
Wish everyone could be like you…
And help me reach out for that rainbow,
The everlasting harmony of colors around
us every day.
People wonder why life's worth livin’
this way.
Well, why not! I can see it through your
eyes,
Vision through your eyes.
(Instrumental interlude)
When walking’ down our different roads,
we meet again,
You can be sure to find me as I've always
been,
As I've always been…
Reaching’ for that rainbow,
The everlasting harmony of colors around
us every day;
And if people ask me what makes life worth
livin’ this way,
I will tell them of the vision through
your eyes.
Every worry, every strife, and all the
beauty in this life,
I thank God for the vision through your
eyes, the everlasting harmony. |
